Just a 30-minute drive from the Sea of Japan up into the mountains, Mokkei is surrounded by fields and forests. We’re located just above Kakuseinkei gorge, where a mossy trail follows the aquamarine Daishoji river as it travels from the deep mountains out towards the sea. Each of these ecosystems offers us a bounty of ingredients, as well as non-human companions we must coexist and find balance with (including friendly crows, shy tanuki, and sneaky wild boars). Nearby, our friends farm rice following traditional methods that allow fireflies and edible weeds to thrive alongside their crops. The open-air kitchen at Mokkei allows us to experience minute changes in the seasons as we gather and cook, surrounded by greenery
